As we embrace the vibrant energy of May here in San Diego, we are reminded of the deep roots and enduring contributions of the Jewish community. This month marks Jewish American Heritage Month, a time to reflect on our shared history and the values that guide us. At Hebrew Free Loan of San Diego (HFLSD), these values—Tzedakah (Justice) and Gemilut Hasadim (Acts of Loving Kindness)—are the active heartbeat of everything we do.

Jewish Heritage Month San Diego

While San Diego continues to be a hub of innovation, we cannot ignore the economic crosswinds affecting our neighbors. The rising cost of living, particularly in housing and energy, can create a “silent struggle” for families, students, and small business owners alike. Recent data indicates that regional energy costs alone have climbed significantly over the last year, outpacing the gains many households have worked so hard to achieve.

At HFLSD, we understand that a financial setback does not reflect a lack of character or effort. In the spirit of providing a “hand-up, not a hand-out,” our interest-free loans are designed to provide a bridge during these times, ensuring that every member of our community can maintain their dignity while pursuing their goals.

Jewish Heritage Events San Diego

This month is also a time for celebration and connection. San Diego is host to a wonderful array of events honoring Jewish culture and history. We encourage you to join in these community moments:

  • 33rd Annual Lipinsky Family San Diego Jewish Arts Festival: Running through July 14, this festival features virtuoso music, theatre, and dance across various local venues.

  • Regenerate! Eco-Performance Fest: On May 17, visit Coastal Roots Farm for an immersive experience featuring food, music, and original plays that explore Jewish mysticism and ecological rituals.

  • Jewish Languages Event at UCSD: Join the exploration of Hebrew, Yiddish, Ladino, and more on May 18 at the Price Center, featuring music and film clips tracing the cultural journeys of the diaspora.

  • Padres’ Jewish Heritage Celebration: On Tuesday, May 26, our community will gather at Petco Park. The evening features a special national anthem performance by Federation President Heidi Gantwerk and a ceremonial first pitch by Rabbi Scott Meltzer of Ohr Shalom.
